Q&A: This is Anthony Church
Anthony Church first reached out to me in the fall of 2024 while I was on hiatus from the blog. It’s been a long journey, but I am so happy that we were able to coincide my return to blogging with this interview! We discuss his wonderful new album, his musical beginnings, more new music coming out in 2025, and so much more! Be sure to check out the playlist below at the end and continue to support his future work!
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
How did you get started making music?
I got my start nine years ago in 2016 shortly after graduating high school. My friend and I began together and I made beats for him. So since then I’ve been at it consistently.
Why did you name your newest album “When Loves The Motive”?
So this initially was intended to be an EP in 2021 that was going to feature all R&B artists. It just didn’t come together as I planned and the people I had in mind were busy with other commitments at the time. So I took the name and decided to shift it to a solo instrumental project that centered around the importance of love in someone’s life. No matter if it’s a passion you have for your career, a significant other or just someone who means a lot to you, everyone can relate to love in some way. So these particular beats for me represent what that sounds like with no words incorporated.
How does this project differ from your previous ones?
It definitely is the next step of growth sonically. Just having better sound selection and improving my output over the years has allowed me to get a little bit more refined each time I’m putting out a new body of work.
My favorite track is “Afternoon”. Tell me about the making of that song.
That particular beat was made two years ago in 2023. I actually am doing a behind the beat video for that one in July so be on the lookout but it really started with the main guitar that I chopped up and rearranged. I named it “Afternoon” since it reminded me of a sunny day spent with someone you care most about. It gave off a very vibrant and warm energy that I felt could best represent that setting in song form!
Who are some musicians that inspire you?
There are a lot of artists I’ve listened to over the years and I feel there are more each year that I’m discovering and adding to my rotation. Currently I’m listening to a lot more producers and their releases. Elaquent, NappyHIGH, and Knxwledge are a few people who have been getting plays from me recently.
What do you want listeners to take away from “When Loves The Motive”?
I just hope they enjoy it and have some music they can live life to. Hopefully it helps remind them of a good memory or two at the same time. That’s really the end goal for me with anything I release is just to make the listener feel some kind of emotion and get them through their day.
Will you be releasing more music this year?
Yes, I actually have another album that will be released this fall that I’m very excited about! I also have some new collaborations with other producers and artists coming out throughout the second half of the year as well.
If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would probably have to go with baked spaghetti with meatballs but that’s only because I’ve had it recently and it comes to mind.
